Working Out of a Home Office: Maintaining the Balance Between “Home” and “Office”

In one sense, working from a home office can provide someone with the ultimate freedom.  The idea of working in comfortable clothes, being near your children, or not having to deal with a morning commute is music to the ears for most harried workers.  In another, however, working from home means a great deal of organization and planning, and yes work.  The trick, of course is to find that right balance between your personal and professional life.  After all, to make your life more fulfilling, you need to get the most out all aspects of your life.

One method for trying to accomplish this is to use a schedule.  For most work at home warriors, there is a belief that every moment of every day must be used in the pursuit of either their business or the betterment of their family.  However, both will demand all they can from you, and if you allow for no reserve time, your fuel tank will be emptied faster than you can answer that email from a client.  By following a schedule, however, or allowing only a set amount of hours per day for your job, you’ll be sure to maintain at least a little bit of balance.

Second, it is important to remember that your business needs to be separate from your family.  When you are working, put the ideas and activities of your family off to the side and vice versa.  It is not to say that your family is any less important than your business- far from it.  However, in order to get the tasks completed, it is better to devote your full attention to them.  That way, when they are completed, your family, and yourself can become the focus of your world.

It is also a good idea to know when you could use a helping hand.  If you know that there will be an important client conference call in two days, consider hiring a babysitter to entertain your kids with a trip to the park.  That way, they get to enjoy the outdoors, while you close the sale with professionalism.  Indeed, if your workload gets to be a bit overwhelming for you, bringing on a virtual assistant to help alleviate things can be a lifesaver.

It is also important to remember that every successful business venture is only a success if it enriches your life.  It is vital to know when to turn off your “open for business” sign and focus on yourself and your family.  This may mean that the schedule may have to be a bit more flexible, or that one client who calls at dinner may be put on hold.  Whatever you method, it is important for you to prioritize your business and personal life so that your entire life is as fulfilling as it can be.
